About
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to work with singer, composer and vocal researcher Anita Daulne, whose 35-year international career has been dedicated to exploring the voice through performance, composition, research and collective singing.
With cultural roots in Congo and Belgium, Anita has developed an original approach to vocal music that brings together African and European musical sensibilities, polyphony, rhythm, groove and improvisation.
Her work, known as Ethno Vocal Groove, explores the voice as a living and creative instrument. Drawing from a wide range of vocal practices and traditions, she focuses on listening, rhythm, embodiment and the interaction between voices, using these elements as a basis for collective creation and spontaneous musical development.
Rather than simply reproducing a repertoire, her workshops invite singers to experience how musical structures can emerge through the group itself — through rhythm, harmony, movement, call-and-response and improvisation.
In 2007, Oxford Contemporary Music commissioned Anita to create the Afropean Choir, which she led for five years. The work continued through Mizike, formed by members of the original choir, who have continued singing together in Oxford and performing at local community events and festivals. Members of Mizike will be joining the afternoon workshop on 7th November.
Anita’s workshops are immersive, energetic and demanding in the best sense: they invite participants to listen deeply, respond to one another and discover new possibilities within their own voices and within the group.
No previous experience of reading music is required. What matters most is the willingness to listen, sing, experiment and create together.
